Me llamo Orlando Santos.

About

Amatl was at the heart of a literate, complex civilization that cherished memory, honour and virtue. The tonalamatl governed birth, death and daily life. Historical memory was kept in the "picture paintings", as the Spanish called them. The governance of an empire required records. Amate paper has been at the heart of these realities for millennia.

The few surviving books of the Mesoamerican world, Maya, Aztec, Mixtec and others, are scattered around the globe, a remnant of a turbulent past. The reassertion of Mexican Indigenous identity is a product of the last hundred years, and slowly people are learning to remember.

Our mission is to bring this reality to the forefront, rediscovering a lost, glorious past.

I'm Orlando Santos. I have lived in Canada since 1968 and have practised law since 1984; today I still work as a lawyer part-time. But by nature and inclination I am an amateur historian: a full-time student of history, a traveller and a frequent visitor to Mexico. I have been blogging as an amateur for some 30 years. I went to high school at Harbord Collegiate Institute in Toronto, where I studied Latin among other subjects, and then studied at Wilfrid Laurier University (B.A. in political science and philosophy), Osgoode Hall Law School (J.D., Juris Doctor) and the Schulich School of Business (M.B.A.). I'm a citizen of Canada and Portugal, I speak English, Portuguese and Spanish, and I'm a father of three living in Brampton, Ontario, Canada.

My work can also be found on Instagram as @orlando_anahuac (Anáhuac), on writing and education in Mesoamerica before Cortés.
